Because I'm not a ranter...except about a few things. However, I just was listening to a report on NPR last night on PGD --pre-implantation genetic diagnosis
Now, I understand the heartbreak of a "broken" child, but I do not feel this is something I would ever do. I am not criticising the parents in this report. However, the statement by the mother really set my head to spinning. Brief history: this couple had a child with spinal muscular atrophy. Not wanting to have another child with such a disease, the parents turned to PGD. The mother took drugs increasing her egg output per month. The eggs were then fertilized in vitro (about 15 of them, I think). The fertility clinic sent these embryos to the PGD specialist, who took one cell from each embryo, except for numbers 8 and 13 because they were not developing properly. With genetic testing, the scientist was able to determine that two of these embryos would have SMA and the other 10 or so were fine. The healthy embryos were frozen, awaiting implantation.
Here's the crazy part:
When asked how many children she would like the mother said "I don't know. As many as God gives us..."
Hunh?

Hmmm . . . I think she's already taken it out of God's hands.
